Getting Found by AI: How ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews Choose What to Mention

David · 11 February 2026 · 6 min read

Search behaviour is shifting in a way most small businesses haven't noticed yet. A meaningful and growing share of questions that used to produce a page of blue links now get answered directly — by Google's AI Overviews, by ChatGPT, by Perplexity — with the underlying sources cited, or sometimes not cited at all. Ranking first in the old sense matters less if the AI answer above it means nobody scrolls down to see it.

What these systems are actually doing

AI answer engines aren't ranking pages the way a traditional search engine does — they're synthesising an answer from whatever sources they can read clearly, then optionally naming a few of them. That means the game isn't just "rank on page one" anymore, it's "say the thing an AI would want to quote, in a way it can actually extract cleanly."

What makes a business quotable

  • Clear, direct answers to specific questions — "do you fix boilers on weekends" answered plainly on a page, not buried in a paragraph of brand copy.
  • Structured data (schema markup) that spells out opening hours, services, location and pricing in a format machines can parse without guessing.
  • Consistent facts across the website, Google Business Profile and any directories — AI systems cross-reference, and contradictions make a source look unreliable.
  • Genuine, specific detail rather than generic marketing language — "we specialise in Victorian terrace rewiring" is far more citable than "quality service you can trust."

This doesn't replace the fundamentals

None of this works as a substitute for a fast, well-built site and a well-maintained Google Business Profile — it's built on top of them. An AI system still needs something well-structured to read in the first place. The businesses positioning themselves well for this shift aren't chasing a trick; they're the ones already doing the basics properly, then making sure the information is written in a way that's as easy for a machine to extract as it is for a person to read.
